If I were in the same situation, and have been when I acquired an r710 with server 2008 R2, I would image the current install and virtualize it in ESXi or XCP-NG (xenserver off shoot) and have a VM for the windows server for domain and Sys-Admin experimentation. I would maximize that experience by trying a few of the following if not all. Yes it’s a server running 2012 R2, and there are cheaper options as well as old boxes you could go get for free that will play old games, but that server is a playground for experimentation. I think we are kinda missing the major points here of the original post. I would be looking to remote desktop into the VM from a local PC on the same network, all hard wired on 1gb nic's so I would think that should eliminate any issues on speed / bandwidth.Īnyone else here tried this? Anything else I need to look at or is this even a runner? I don't plan on running anything hardcore or graphic intensive on this but will that even matter? As they are all so old I don't think there is any major specification requires on them that I can't emulate on the host. I would like to set up a virtual machine in Hyper V which runs an old OS, I'm thinking Windows XP, to play these games. Talking original Age of Empires, Commandos, that type of thing, 20 plus years old. Found an old external drive I used to use for backing up data and I have rip's of some of my old games on it. One of the things I'd like to play around with (literally) is playing some old school PC games on it. Looking to play around with Hyper V and the OS in general and do some home learning over the next few months with it. Clean install so not work data i need to worry about. ![]() Bit of a relic at this stage, its a Dell T610, 32gb ram with a Xeon E520 proc, Windows Server 2012 R2 installed. ![]() So I have picked up an older server from a pile we were decommissioning at work.
